Circus Kids

The Clown.

He made them giggle, loudly too. I'd never thought the sound of 50+ children, laughing, could be so beautiful. They were with family, and they seemed to be having a great time as well. Then something struck me...

Children.

Do we, should we all want them? We all were once, for some people it's actually hard to believe they were that tiny (pics or it didn't happen). I struggle with my thoughts around having children. I've always thought I'd love to do a Jolie-Pitt but there are so many things I'm scared of, things I'm not convinced of. Research says children do not make you happier i.e you don't have kids so you can be happy because it will go the opposite way, fast. So why then?

While sat in the Circus with the sound of laughter rising above the smell of animal urine, I began to understand a reason why. God didn't create us to make God happier, we were created to delight in this happy God, to share God's joy and bask in God's love, such delight. It's a huge responsibility but seeing all those families glowing made me want to share my love, share my joy. I was glad to have my sister with me, we had a jolly time.

Siblings are Forever

The very best thing that your parents can give to you is brothers and sisters
           Father Schall said
It is perfectly alright to be an only child, but there is an abundance of joy in having brothers and sisters.
Two years after my brother, Emmanuel went to the great beyond. We had to eat up all the baby formula that had been bought for him before they expired. It wasn't morbid. I think my mum preferred us to eat it than seeing it go to another baby out there. Fun times. My grandma made baby toys out of the formula scoops. Red scoops they were, I couldn't forget this period.

 Brothers & Sisters Forever.

I whip my heir back and forth

One Saturday in my distant past, We had gone to spend the day at Apapa Club (as usual) We came back and settled to a nice dinner in the candle-lit living room. Everyone seemed rested, well and happy then my older sister asked me the question..'Where is my wrist watch?' *GHEN GHEN* I had a quick flashback to the swimming pool changing room..I remembered glancing at the watch on the wooden bench..but sadly I never picked it up. My mum had just given us these mickey mouse watches which she bought on her last trip to the UK. My mum then turned to me, 'Where is the watch?' 'It should be in the bag' I managed, talking about the canvass bag which we put in our towels and swimsuits. My sister exclaims, 'Its not there! I've checked' Next thing I knew, I saw a bottle of water..not bottle, 'keg' flying towards my head.

I got reminded of this topic again, while I watched kids dance to 'I whip my hair' at the party today. How far is too far when it comes to the discipline of a child? There was a topic on Nairaland.com where people talked about the beatings their parents had given them, in some other countries, those experiences would be Child Abuse, pure and simple. While reading the book on Fela, he talked about the beatings he got, it was funny and sad at the same time.

My mum was the disciplinarian, and we did spend a lot of our younger years with her, She used everything from canes (She was a teacher) to branches, 'Omorogun' (Wooden stick used to 'turn eba' or any other paste like that) one time she really took the verse which says 'Spare the rod and spoil the child' to heart and used the rods that were used to build the last born's baby cot. LOL. That day in our play we could have killed ourselves, so I second that punishment! My mum has also done some things which I find unacceptable, but right now I don't feel bitter, then again everyone is not me. I strongly detest physical attacks compared to verbal, infact verbal ones, usually just enter one ear and pass through the next, but physical tends to leave scars which becomes a double edged sword, scars on the body and on the mind. No, I can't stand that. I do not have any scars from any beatings I got from my mum, the only scar you will see on my body are battle scars (My Sister and I) Military scars (Flogging in Nigerian Navy). Flogging in schools was another issue o, I still remember heavily the flogging I got on my legs in Primary four, because of some times table, thankfully no scars!!

Personally, if I do bring a child into this world, It would be because I have decided to love and care for another human being that is a part of me. There are things I would certainly not do, flogging or beating like there's no tomorrow, no way. I would try to make my child understand why certain things shouldn't be done. Depending on the situation, I hope I would be able to use wisdom and initiative when it comes to that point. I find that the picture of Gods relationship with man is what I'd like to project in my own life. I would want my children to respond to me out of love. I would prefer that the reason they do not do certain things would be mostly because it would hurt not just me, themselves also, just like I wouldn't do things deliberately to hurt them. And I hope they would understand that even though they still do such things and would have to bear the direct/indirect consequence (the sow and reap law), I will always be a mother to them, and my love will never diminish.

011110

The number palindrome, this is a significant day for me, and perhaps millions of the world population, Some were born and some died. I am glad to be among the living. My sister also gave birth to a baby girl in the wee hours of the day, bless. At that time, on my own side of the world, I had passed through an experience both sordid and enlightening.

In true INFJ style, I don't like confrontations, and I would avoid it as much as possible, 'cause I know depending on the level, things may never go back to how they were.. but what do you do when someone puts it on you. It's my initial reaction to resist or get stubborn about it. Alas, I was dealing with the wrong person. It hurt me just thinking about the implications of things said, and I couldn't hold back the tears. Which further escalated the whole brouhaha. Anyways, I know I'm hard hearted to an extent, I wasn't always this way, but life has made me so. Some may argue that I haven't any experience, but I have seen with my own two eyes what Humans can do to Humans.

I cried a whole lot, and while still recovering from my 'flu' wasn't a good look. Everything I wanted to say sounded better in my head, but I just couldn't communicate effectively the way I felt, because my state of mind was hurt and very torn.

Anyway, I do understand that a whole lot of what happened was my fault, If i was serious enough, I wouldn't even be in the vincinity in the first place, for such to happen. I can only hope that it never does take place again, that I may look upon this day and just laugh and perhaps not remember..lol. I realise it's possible to love someone without liking them. Now I know a couple, I don't like.

Our House, The Hotel.

'You have to sleep in the other room' these were familiar words we grew up with. Most times, the 'other room'  was the living room. There was a hardly a time, where we lived in our house, as a nuclear family, alone. For as long as I can remember there were always people, relatives, helps, uncles, cousins..and so on, living with us.and the random..well not totally random stranger who my parents..usually one of them at a time, decided to help.

The First Hotel was a three bedroom 'government' apartment in V.I, which had two floors, a living room and a 'make-shift' lobby/childrens room on the top floor. For the period we lived here, I can't remember us being asked to sleep elsewhere but we had auntys and 'helps' with us. I still have pictures from my 1st year brtday which i vaguely remember.(Believe it or not! lol) Some vivid memories like when one of our Auntys..my mums younger sister. punished me for something I really can't remember. She asked me to drink about 10 bottles of water, the bottles were glass and had different colours. One of my chores then as a Nursery school student was to fill the bottles and put in the fridge. When I was asked to kneel and drink the water, I thought it was a piece of cake, But on the second bottle, my tummy had swollen, it was like I had kwashiokor. I begged for mercy.

The Second  Hotel, tucked away in an 'Estate' on the Mainland, what comes to mind is the Nigerian remix of the song 'Umbrella' It was a four bedroom flat with just a little living room, I remember spending some nights sprawled on the couch here. In the 3-year period we lived there, We had our Grandma who had one room solely to herself, she also took care of my little sister, My aunt was there too. A male relative ('Uncle') who constantly had some issues with my older sisters shared a room with my brother who was at Uni then and usually came every now and then. Life here was dogged by NEPA-less nights, mosquitos, Borehole issues and what not. It was a great time though my 'coming-of-age'

The Third Hotel, All the way in the capital city of Abuja. This was by far the most spacious house, and is basically GRAND compared to all the others. I honestly cannot even give a number of the people who have passed through this hotel. It was in this house, my sisters and I thought about it and said Honestly, this is *insert surname* Hotel. The house has Five bedrooms and a 'Boys-quarter' But i have spent a lot of time in the sitting room (Luckily there were two of them). There have been diffrent kinds of people here (The good, the bad, the witch, Beauty and the Ugly), but the only time I remember my mum complain was when she said of a relative who had spent about two years and was working 'Common toothpaste, he cannot even buy!' and she spoke of a female 'Who does she expect to wash her plates??' Other than that, Its been a free for all. as long as you weren't lazy, lying, stealing or being a 'principality'

As kids, to us it was just fun and games, As teenagers we didnt find it funny a lot of times. But as we began to grow older. Certain things began to click..Well for me, it did. I have had to spend time in other people's homes, over the course of my education. While we lived in Abuja, I was still at boarding school in Lagos. But during Mid-term breaks, There was no way I was going to Abuja for the three to four days it was, so I had to put up with Family-Friends and Relatives...I have experienced good and very bad times, but not as bad as my friend in the same plight who got molested by a relative who was even a Pastor...

Even right now, I have been staying with my 'Aunt' and 'Uncle' who are the nicest people ever, for the past one month. My Uncle once said 'Staying with people is probably one of the most difficult things to do' My friends have really bad narrations of their ordeals staying with people and it is just a sad cycle. It always pays to treat people with decency and dignity, respect others as Human beings. You don't know where you or yours would end up tomorrow. Treat people the way, you would like to be treated. These are some of the things I have learnt from these episodes of my life.

The Nigerian Dream

It was 1992, the first time in Abuja. We went to spend Summer Holidays with our Dad. My mum, sisters and I boarded Nigerian Airways and made the 50mins journey to the capital city. It was an amazing experience. My dad had gone out of his way to make this holiday special for us. He came to pick us from the airport and drove us straight to Agura Hotel. We were all amazed at how smooth the roads were, and how new the buildings seemed. This is like London, my sister quipped several times. At the hotel, we had a FEAST in every sense of the word, all manners of food and drink, I really couldn't love my dad more at that point. But alas due to my stomach sensitivity I was visiting the toilet in no time. If we go by first impressions, Abuja was a pretty awesome place to be.

When we got settled into the house my Dad had been living in at the OAU Quarters, a nice cosy three bedroom apartment, my sisters and I wasted no time exploring within and without. We spent the mornings watching our favorite Christian musical and the afternoons exploring the nearby hills. Abuja was indeed something the whole of Nigeria could aspire to be like. Back in Lagos where we live, NEPA was the main hindrance to our fun, but here we could watch our movies all day with no fear of the power being cut, and when it did, in a minute we could cheekily call NEPA and have the power restored in seconds. Bliss!!

Night-time was equally splendid. After our usual cups of Nescao, we would get on our cosy bed. The weather was usually cool that time of the year, so we would pretend we were 'Abroad'. Tell ourselves stories and sleep off when we were exhausted. One of such nights, I had the dream. I remember the shades of blue duvet I had. It always made it seem my dreams were bathed in a light blue glow.

Waking up, I glanced around, and stretched while I sat there on my bed. My room was large and I was alone. The sun streamed in through large glass windows which the whole house was covered with. This seemed like straight out of the Jetsons. I got off my bed and pressed a button, my night wear was taken off and dumped into the bin which sends dirty cloths to the laundry. My dressing gown came on. Food! I thought, I went to the panel and pressed a button. An array of breakfast came sliding towards me, as I lay back on my 'La-z-boy' type chair and proceeded to dig into the food. All in my mind was, This is the Life!

Out of mind

Back here again, theres lots i want to say but as usual my mind is struggling to put it all out in words. My week started great, upbeat and positive, but as it got nearer the weekend, it all went bust!
I couldn't travel to Gloucester again no money :(. All the promises failed, (See why my trust in people is at an all time low). I couldn't get a party dress for the Valentine dinner on Friday, I then decided to cheer myself up with. I didn't go and sulked the Friday away. Saturday, had to end up at the library doing project work, i couldn't get my kinky braids..i decided to move it all to next week.
Procastination is quite deadly and as much as i try to stay in the now, unknowingly i file some things into this box and it costs me. My mind is constantly working out ow o organise myself and do things with minimum stress while try to make sure i remember all those that matter in my life, hard feat...

As to my PDP, i got my assessment feedback on wednesday and i probably had the lowest score in the class even though i got a Merit, but its a Pass/Fail so all well and good. It also made me see the many flaws in out educational system back in Nigeria, i kinda wished i had come here earlier. Lots of things that matter are usually pushed aside in our system.

Anyways, Getting into the new, throwing away the old, breathing and breathing out, thankful for Family and friends around me! its all good :D

Of Weddings, Horosope andThings

Had to get this in, before i take my internet break. :D

Actually a friend of mine asked me this question today

when is your own wedding na?

in 4years and one month i replied, well thats what facebook says and the strange thing is, its exactly the same month my sister got married and her particular age too . .

Hearing about weddings makes me have cold feet, my friend also told me about two people we know who met on Nairaland.com and are arranging their wedding now, and another friend of mine from school (classmate)told me her wedding date had been fixed for July.

I always did dream about one kain fantastic wedding like that but the closer it gets, the more the probability drops, its one of those things you cant afford to make a mistake about, the only way out of it is death, imagine the finality of it! and the horoscope says my best match is Capricorn, where do i get those from now!

i guess if or when you feel right about it, it'll happen
my friend said,

Yeah i guess but i really dont want all that ceremony and paparazzi
id like something like this---->http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/a-simply-chic-wedding-14

Really, Nigerian weddings..r just, i don't want my face in peoples houses on bowls, cups, buckets theyd use to pack shit or something, calender, writing pads they'd tear up
participating in my sisters wedding really opened my eyes further, i wont do it like that at all, my family may rage. .

they will rage but in the end, it should really be what you want
my friend says

exactly, besides they have five other people to settle them
four now..actually.lol

i just want it cute, lovely, small, classy, special, unique :D

I am Virgo,

NB:i dont do horoscope, astrology thingy thingy, its just fun sometimes, but i gotta admit, many things they describe fits.

The License to Kill

The issue of Driving is now becoming a big deal
My dad was saying the other day that he had to test me.
The first and last time I drove, I scratched a brand new car
I'm not afraid of getting behnd the wheel, but really, I can't be bothered

I fear I'm too impatient and I'd probably be driving the way I do in Gran Turismo.
with my brother screaming, can't YOU DRIVE STRAIGHT! Shocked

I fear i will drive like my mum who we call Speedy Racer, but I'd be Speedy Racer on Crack
She's the best driver I know, In my dads car, a tortoise will hit the mile mark before the back tires roll.

ANYWAYS, I love seeing people Drive
why take a job from someone, Drivers are meant to Drive
I'm sorry but its the way i see it. Grin Grin Grin

I will be back on this topic, I'm supposed to enter a driving school
let me see how it goes
bye bye 4 now Grin
